About Water Production
The City of Loma Linda's water production division provides water from the cities own six production wells. Loma Linda's main water source is ground water within the vast Bunker Hill Basin. Nearly all of the snow melt running down from the San Bernardino Mountains replenishes this basin. Loma Linda water supply meets our current needs and we are not reliant on State Water Project aqueducts and surface channels or rivers, as is the case with many areas of California.
The City of Loma Linda water supply meets or exceeds all current health and safety standards. The City continues to improve our water system to meet both supply demands and future quality standards.
Production facilities include: Four above ground steel reservoirs and two in-ground pre-stressed concrete with a combined storage capacity of 14 million gallons. These reservoirs provide storage to the city's five different pressure zones. In the distribution system there are six pressure reducing stations that lower water pressure from one zone to another to provide constant regulated pressure. To transfer water between zones there are six booster stations located in the different zones.
Keeping track of the cities production system is a complex computer system called S.C.A.D.A. (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition). This S.C.A.D.A. system has the ability to monitor the twenty three remote sites ranging from reservoir levels, pressures in the different zones, chlorine residuals, operation of boosters and wells, and automatically make system adjustments to predetermined set points. After normal working hours, personnel have the ability to check the system from a laptop computer using a standard phone line. If any problem should occur, the system can be manually operated by production personnel without the S.C.A.D.A. causing no disruption of service.
